Implementing DOCSIS within the Hospitality Industry

In the industry today, hospitality providers are under pressure to supply users with access to high-speed internet, IPTV and WIFI services. Unfortunately, older properties do not have the correct infrastructure needed for adequate network access, with the only option for many properties is to pull new cabling which can be costly, time-consuming and can lead to a loss of revenue for the property. A simple and easy-to-use solution is to use the already existing in TV cable network and the international telecommunications standard of ‘DOCSIS’.

DOCSIS makes use of the already existing coaxial cable in order to provide broadband access. By using this robust and versatile cable, you are ensuring that there are high streaming bitrates and an error-free transmission necessary for video and IPTV services; all without having to install any new cables! This system does not affect the delivery of the TV channels. The data signals are carried through the same cable using different frequencies as a part of the unused spectrum. (TV signals occupy less than 1/3 of the available space). DOCSIS delivers bi-directional IP traffic at up to 960Mbps total bandwidth, (upstream and downstream/to and from the internet) using signals similar to the existing TV broadcast.

In order to introduce cable broadband into your network, you will need to install a Mini-CMTS at the head end of the existing coax network. This acts as a managed switch and media converter, taking IP Data in and converting it to DOCISIS for delivery over the coax cables. The process is reversed for the upstream traffic returning to the internet. All of the usual IP functions are available as the coax appears as just a transparent pipe in the IP network, the same as a CAT cable would. We also fully support multiple VLANS, to separate and protect guest traffic.

Our mini CMTS has a simple but very comprehensive Web GUI, for setup and management, as well as a CLI interface and SNMP for integration into a larger management system.

Delivering the Service direct to the guest

Cable modem: This is needed at every endpoint, in order to transfer the RF signals back into regular Ethernet traffic; this can then be used by normal IP devices with RJ45 connectors on them. The modem can be a data outlet or can have a combination of data and WiFi within the same small box.

WiFi Hotspot: The Zoneflex C110 combines a Wave 2 access point, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and an Ethernet switch to deliver wired and wireless connectivity over coaxial cable infrastructure.

TV with Built-in Cable Modem: The Samsung HE693 TV has an embedded DOCSIS® 3.0 cable modem enabling interactive and SMART functionalities without the need for an external modem, streamlining installation and management.
