Optimo transcoder platform for DNS:NET

The German full-service network operator DNS:NET Internet Service GmbH has opted for the Optimo Transcoder solution from Teleste, in order to offer its customers HDTV programmes in optimal quality.

In 1998, the telecommunications company DNS:NET was founded in Berlin and Brandenburg. Based on its own fibre-optic rings and high-security data centres, the service portfolio of DNS:NET covers the entire spectrum of IP-based services for business customers as well as telephony, Internet connections and TV products for the residential customer segment.

Since 2007, DNS:NET has been investing specifically in infrastructure expansion and expansion with fibre optics. The company removes regional white spots (these are areas without fast Internet) by supplying them with high-speed Internet coverage and multimedia products. With its own network infrastructure, the companies of the DNS:NET Group today provide end customers, as well as network operators, with wholesale products. DNS:NET offers solution which are fast, reliable and state-of-the-art.

Customer need

DNS:NET will expand its TV offerings to include programmes in the HD format of public service and private broadcasters. The DNS:NET customers are supplied via a 10x10Gb backbone in the areas of Berlin and Brandenburg, as well as in the ‘last mile’, via FTTH structures. In addition, HFC structures with a DVB-C distribution now also belong to the supply area.

As bandwidth demands increase, DNS:NET was looking for a solution to optimize the payload data rate on the backbone and in the distribution network. For this, the HDTV programmes are to be reduced to a data rate of 8 MB/s. There are 15 HDTV programmes encrypted in 720p format and 24 HDTV programmes encrypted in 1080i format.

Solution to customer’s need

To receive the HDTV programmes, two Luminato chassis are used, which are equipped with the quad and dual multi-standard receiver modules LRM-A and LRM-B. In order to be able to cover the supply in the IPTV area, the modules also have a demultiplexing function, so that each service can be provided with its own IP address as an SPTS. The additional IP multiplexer modules LIM-A integrated into the chassis take care of the EPG data update required after transcoding, as well as the AES encryption of private HD programmes for IPTV. The IP switch required to route the streams was provided by DNS:NET for this project.

The data is reduced via two separate Optimo transcoders. Optimo is a unified platform for a wide range of video processing applications, providing a compact carrier-class solution for multi-screen video transcoding and Iinternet and mobile video streaming. Any format at the input can be transcoded to any output format. Examples include transcoding MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 or h.265 HEVC, multi-profile transcoding and segmentation beyond data reduction. The Optimo was selected as an appliance solution according to the formats that are to be processed. For the programmes of the private broadcasters, which are broadcast in the format 1080i/h.264, the Optimo L703 was selected, which has the capacity to transcode 24 programmes. The public service programmes are available in 720p/h.264 format. For the data reduction of these 15 programmes, the Optimo L303 is used.

The required distribution of the programmes in DVB-C format is then spatially separated by another Luminato chassis. This is equipped with two quad QAM modulator modules LQM-C. The multiplex option of the modules allows the customized composition of the programme bouquets. In addition, private HD programmes are encoded according to the DVB standard.

Teleste’s Service and Support Manager Urs Pistorius stated: “The Optimo platform enables the optimization of data transmission on the DNS:NET backbone and distribution network, and thus, the provision of the TV programmes in high and reliable quality for DNS:NET customers.”
