Teleste CX4: Compact Amplifier for Distribution Networks

The CX4 offers a robust solution for 1.8 GHz networks. The platform is especially designed to meet high performance requirements of networks with short cascade lengths as well as end of the line active elements.

Designed as a continuation of the successful CX3 amplifier, the CX4 is a compact dual output amplifier in European style housing with an IP67 rating. It features up to 492 MHz return path, set by diplexers and filter modules. It is easy to operate using an integrated display and push-buttons, and comes in multiple powering options. The RF amplifier stages are based on extremely high performance GaN solution, making the usable gain range wide and allowing for high output levels.

Features and Functionality

In addition to its high RF performance, the CX4 has multiple features that makes it a great choice for deployment, when you are upgrading your networks to 1.8 GHz.

As the end amplifier model, CX4-D can be used in conjunction with a multitap to provide high quality video and internet services to multiple end-customers. An example application is an MDU, where the amplifier could be conveniently located at the entry point of the coaxial line into the building and its outputs are connected to the drop cables through the multitap ports.

The group amplifier variant, CX4-DG, allows you to route power to the network elements further down the line from its outputs. It can therefore be used as a distribution amplifier. This is in addition to the bypass port present in both models, which allows the amplifier to behave as an active tap, passing power and RF directly from the input with minimum losses.

As the newest addition to the CX series of products, the CX4 can also be ordered with CXT25, an HMS transponder, offering a low-cost solution for simple monitoring and control of the element. Specifically, it allows the use Remote Ingress Switching and remote control of Power Save setting as well as monitoring of temperature, lid status as well as HMS link status. It integrates seamlessly into Teleste’s Argus ecosystem and could be used with the SmartRIS for automatically detecting and suppressing harmful signals in the return path.

The Power Saving functionality of the amplifier allows network operators to save up to 10 % on the related costs when maximum RF level is not required. To make this a simple endeavor, operators can rely on Automatic Power Save which, when enabled, requires lower power supplied to the amplifier. This feature is always present and doesn’t rely on remote connectivity.

To help with the amplifier installation and configuration of the network, the CX4 features Return Auto Alignment, which reduces the time it takes to fully align the amplifier. It works by locking the return path settings to follow the forward path settings. This feature turns off automatically when any return path setting is changed to ensure that manual control happens seamlessly.

Features of the CX4 Amplifier Platform

Below are presented the main features of the CX4 platform that highlight its capabilities

  • High gain 1.8 GHz forward path
  • Low power consumption and Power Save functionality
  • Excellent RF performance for both forward and return path
  • DOCSIS 4.0 ESD compatibility, supporting Ultra-High Splits
  • Group amplifier and End amplifier variants (DG and D models)
  • Remote control options via HMS transponder CXT25
  • Local control with a display and push-buttons
  • Removable lid
  • Return Auto Alignment

    Summary

The CX4 amplifier platform comes in two primary variants, both offering an excellent set of features as well as high performance in compact housing. It is a robust and reliable answer to 1.8 GHz network requirements where short cascade lengths are present.
